My Favorite Note-Taking Tools

Obsidian and Drafts are the winners. I’ve used Drafts for years and it’s a fantastic place for text to start. And Obsidian is a great place for text to finish.

Why these two different tools? Drafts is fast. And you don’t have to think, you just type. Then you take action on that text, triaging it to the appropriate place.

Over the last decade I’ve had times where I practically built an OS on Drafts, starting text messages, Discord messages, Emails, Journal entries, and more all from Drafts then triggering an action to triage it to the right place.

But Obsidian brings a different toolset to the table. I used to use Editorial on iPad/iPhone and Atom on Mac for what I now use Obsidian for. It’s the long-term storage location for text.

Now Drafts is fairly successful with long-term storage, it uses tagging very well. But there’s something about having a folder structure. And it’s good that Drafts doesn’t because that’s not what it’s for. Each tool has its purpose.

Now, to get good at these tools, you have to get comfortable with Markdown which is a small learning curve, but it’s simple & worth it. Check out my blog post on Markdown for that.
